Don't Panic About This Journey Card Update

If you’ve used your journey card (行程卡 xíngchéng kǎ) since Jan 20 or if you’ve simply perused your WeChat Moments since yesterday, you’ll have noticed a small change in info for Beijing.

When updating one’s status on the Covid-related mini-program – pretty much a location tracker that monitors if you’ve been to any risky areas within a span of 14 days – under the green arrow in a circle, if your location reads 北京市 běijīng shì (Beijing), it’s accompanied by a block of text in parentheses with an asterisk.

The update in question

What does that mean? Most importantly, it means don't panic.

According to Beijing Daily, the text reads
"this asterisk is to indicate that the city you've visited in the past 14 days contains medium or high-risk areas, but it doesn't necessarily mean you've visited these places".

Instead of marking cities with risk areas in red, the report continues, the risk areas within the city will be listed within parentheses after the city name. These are essentially pointers, showing mini-program users where not to go in a city with outbreaks.

If you're worried you might have passed through a risk area, Beijing Daily recommends reporting to your community, employer, or relevant hospital or clinic to undergo quarantine and health monitoring.

Previously, cities experiencing any outbreaks or with risk areas were marked in red

Two areas of Beijing are now classified as medium risk: a housing complex in Fengtai and a small industrial park in Fangshan.

Areas are designated medium-risk if confirmed cases jump to three or above with a 14-day period, and become high-risk if 50 or more cases are discovered.

Areas will revert back to low-risk or all clear, of course, if all infected individuals are cured and no new cases arise.

The designation of the medium-risk areas in Fengtai and Fangshan also comes on the heels of the
city's first case of the Omicron variant in Haidian.
